The Resource Centre

The Resource Centre is at the heart of all we do at HAGA.

People with drink problems can get  one-to-one keywork around their alcohol use and join a range of group programmes.

Once a person decides they want our help, we allocate them a key worker to help them plan their own programme. Staff help them to develop living skills, like budgeting and self care, and offer advice and support about housing and benefits.

There is also access to individual counselling, join in with group sessions, and attend workshops on all kinds of issues.  Complementary therapies can also be helpful, so we offer acupuncture.

If we can’t help you directly, we’ll find someone who can.

Groups and programmes:

Pre-Detox Group
These are supportive group sessions for participants who are alcohol dependent and in need of detoxification (either in the community or as an in-patient). The sessions will focus upon participant’s motivations and fears associated with alcohol coupled with advice and preparation for detoxification from our community alcohol nurses.

Post Detox Group
These groups are designed to support participants who have completed an alcohol detoxification with an emphasis upon recovery and relapse prevention. Each session addresses concerns and experiences commonly encountered by individuals who have detoxed from alcohol with advice and support from our community alcohol nurses.

Harm Reduction
The Harm Reduction workshops provide participants with advice, support and information on reducing the harm of alcohol use to both the individual and society as a whole. The workshops provide practical advice on coping with cravings, facts on alcohol, sexual health, sleep relaxation and more.

Relapse Prevention
The Relapse prevention workshops emphasize a transitional process providing clients with an opportunity to address thoughts and behaviours that may have contributed to problematic alcohol use. We will encourage participants to work positively with this as part of their recovery process and will work with the group to understand the theory of the Stages of Change, triggers and high risk situations. Self efficacy is encouraged and practical support is given in regard to coping skills, lifestyle factors, and managing urges and cravings.  A range of strategies are explored and applied to enable the participants to behave differently and help reduce the risk of relapse.

Service User Forum
This is a meeting run by clients for clients - everyone undertaking a group programme, or using any other part of the service.  Every Thursday 1-2pm.

Women’s Group
The women’s group gives an opportunity for women to share positive experiences as well as difficulties with other women in similar circumstances. It allows for discussion, advice and information to be shared by the facilitator and from participants’ own experiences. The group is also a forum for interaction and communication in a confidential, safe and supportive environment. Broadly its content is around an alcohol free or controlled lifestyle. Participants may be encouraged to raise issues that are important to them which they may feel more able to discuss in a women-only environment.

Wheels of Recovery
This group program provides cycling workshops for non riders and offers client led in house instruction. The group meet on Tuesdays and attend the gym, this promotes positive health and social connectedness. Cycling outings are organised for more proficient riders.

Staff-Facilitated Support Group
An open group to discuss whatever issues participants bring or concerns they may have in a supportive and facilitated environment. The aim is to provide a space for participants to openly discuss areas of concern so that support can be offered. This will hopefully reduce the risk of participants returning to patterns of drinking which may be harmful to self, significant others and the general community.

Open Group (Saturday)
On-going group for all service users. Discussion can be free-ranging or specific, light or intense. Broadly, the group’s content is around an alcohol-free or controlled lifestyle, but there's usually a light-hearted relaxed atmosphere.

Peer-Led Support Group
This Peer-Led Support Group focuses on all aspects of long term abstinence, including practical work from major treatment models including 12 steps, cognitive therapy, & mind mapping.

Parenting Skills – facilitated by COSMIC worker
The aim of this group is to promote positive parenting and to provide parents with the mechanisms and resources to parent effectively. Participants choose the aspects of parenting they wish to discuss as a group and offer advice and peer support from their own experiences of parenting to other group members. Some of the topics raised include: behaviour management, budgeting, toilet training as well as confidence and self esteem building exercises.
