“HAGA helped me find a little bit of peace in my life”
When Maurice started treatment at HAGA his one wish was to stay off alcohol completely. Thanks to the comprehensive Breaking Ground programme, he has managed to do just that.
Maurice had been in treatment before, but each time he felt less confident in his ability to stop drinking
He found himself stuck in a cycle of drinking and depression, often waking up in a hospital bed. After managing to become virtually alcohol-free after a stint in rehab, Maurice was worried about what would happen once his treatment ended. Breaking Ground gave him ongoing support and added structure to his life that kept him off the booze.
Maurice says that Breaking Ground helped him find ‘a little bit of peace’ and the tools and techniques he’s learnt during his treatment have helped him to stay away from alcohol.
He’s made friends with many people who were in the same boat and found their support and encouragement invaluable. Maurice has now been abstinent for six months and has just started studying for a degree in biology.
Structured over twelve weeks, Breaking Ground is a stabilisation programme that offers a range of groups and one-to-one support. A client on the programme needs to participate in eight hours of support activities per week; these activities could be one-to-one support, counselling, group sessions or therapy.
The programme runs at the HAGA alcohol service and Haringey residents may come to HAGA directly through one of the drop-in sessions, or be referred by their GP or other health professional.
